Family

Recruited from Romsey, John Reid struggled to break into Melbourne’s senior side before finding his footing at Footscray, the club where his father Bruce played. A reliable defender, Reid became a fixture in the Bulldogs' backline during the late 1970s, often taking the field alongside his brother Bruce Junior. He finished his playing career with a stint at South Melbourne during its tumultuous relocation to become the Sydney Swans, featuring in the club’s inaugural season in the Harbour City. Beyond his playing days, Reid maintained a significant off-field legacy at Sydney, serving as reserves coach and football manager during the late 1980s, solidifying his place as a key figure in a prominent footballing dynasty that later produced nephews Ben and Sam.
