Bio
Recruited from the Murray Bushrangers with pick 38 in the 2009 National Draft, Sam Reid entered the league with high expectations as the younger brother of Collingwood defender Ben Reid. He quickly established himself as a key pillar in Sydney's forward line, using his elite contested marking hands and athleticism to play a crucial role in the club's 2012 Premiership victory at just 20 years of age. While primarily stationed inside 50 as a foil for Lance Franklin, Reid's versatility allowed him to swing into defence or provide relief in the ruck, making him a structurally vital asset for coach John Longmire throughout the club's successful era.
Despite his early success, Reid's career was heavily defined by a relentless run of injuries that prevented him from reaching his absolute ceiling. He missed entire seasons in 2016 and 2018 due to Achilles and soft-tissue setbacks, constantly fighting to regain match fitness. He managed a significant resurgence in 2022 to help guide the Swans to another Grand Final, though injury struck again during that finals series. Reid retired at the end of 2024 as a one-club player and Swans Life Member, remembered as a talented tall whose longevity was a credit to his perseverance in the face of physical adversity.
