Bio
Recruited from Thornton-Eildon via the prestigious Assumption College football program, John Tossol was the first of two brothers to represent Melbourne in the 1980s. The son of a former Demons reserves player, he was a productive rover and forward who earned his senior opportunity late in the 1981 season under Ron Barassi. Tossol played the final two games of the year, gathering plenty of the ball and booting three goals, but found himself unable to break back into the senior side the following season. He eventually departed the VFL to return to country football, later reflecting that he might have forged a longer career at the top level had he committed more fully to the physical demands of elite training.
