A smooth-moving left-footer recruited from Norwood, Jonathon Ross was a talented key position utility whose AFL career was defined by unfulfilled potential. The son of former St Kilda player Lester Ross, he broke into the Adelaide side during the club's formative years, playing 12 of his 20 career games in a promising debut 1992 season. Standing 193cm, Ross possessed strong hands and the versatility to play at either end of the ground or pinch-hit in the ruck, but a series of knee and shoulder injuries severely hampered his continuity over the following four years. Seeking a fresh start, he was traded to Collingwood ahead of the 1997 season in exchange for Brett James. However, his stint at Victoria Park was abruptly terminated before he could debut for the Magpies; he was sacked by the club following significant off-field disciplinary breaches, bringing a premature end to his time in the elite system.
