Selected with pick two in the 2015 National Draft, Josh Schache arrived at the Brisbane Lions carrying significant expectation as a prodigious key forward talent and the son of former Bears player Laurence Schache. His time in Queensland was brief; citing homesickness and the pressure of being a high draft pick in a rebuilding side, he requested a trade to the Western Bulldogs after just two seasons. At Whitten Oval, Schache often struggled to consistently impose himself on contests as a commanding key forward, drifting between the senior side and the VFL. He found a temporary niche during the Bulldogs' 2021 finals campaign, where he was effectively deployed as a defensive forward and relief ruckman, a role that saw him play in the Grand Final loss to Melbourne. Traded to the Demons for a nominal pick to provide structural depth in 2023, he found opportunities scarce behind established key position players. Schache was delisted at the end of 2024, concluding his AFL tenure as a talented left-footer whose elite kicking skills and junior promise rarely translated into sustained performance at the highest level.
