Arriving at Brisbane as the number one selection in the 1990 Mid-Year Draft, Laurence Schache was a prolific SANFL full-forward tasked with solving the Bears' attacking woes. The Hopetoun-born left-footer made an immediate impression in his debut season, utilising his strong hands and reliable set shot to lead the club's goalkicking with 47 majors in 1991. Despite this promising start as the team's focal point, his AFL career was effectively cut short by persistent groin and hamstring injuries that restricted him to just 12 games the following year. Schache returned to South Australia to win a premiership with Woodville-West Torrens before tragically passing away from amyloidosis in 2002, leaving a football legacy that continued when his son, Josh, was drafted to the AFL.
