Bio
Beginning his career at Essendon, Justin Madden initially found himself competing for the primary ruck position against his older brother, Simon, who was rapidly establishing himself as one of the game's all-time greats. Despite showing potential in his three seasons at Windy Hill, list management pressures and the difficulty of accommodating two dominant ruckmen led to his transfer to Carlton ahead of the 1983 season. The move proved to be a defining moment for Madden, allowing him to step out of his brother's shadow and become the cornerstone of the Blues' midfield for the next 15 years.
Standing 206cm, Madden used his immense height and reach to control stoppages, often providing silver service to Carlton's fleet of midfielders. While primarily a tap ruckman, he developed into a dangerous utility who could drift forward to kick goals or drop back to take intercept marks in defence. Affectionately nicknamed "Harry" by the faithful at Princes Park, his on-field persona combined a relaxed demeanour with fierce competitiveness and remarkable durability, allowing him to remain effective well into his mid-30s.
