Bio
Recruited from local club St Christopher's, Simon Madden debuted for Essendon as a teenager in 1974 and evolved into the prototype for the modern mobile ruckman. Early in his career, he formed a formidable, albeit brief, ruck partnership with his younger brother Justin, before the latter's transfer to Carlton left Simon as the undisputed first choice at Windy Hill. Madden distinguished himself by combining dominant tap work with the aerobic capacity to cover the ground like a midfielder and the aerial strength to serve as a genuine key forward, a versatility that saw him boot 575 career goals.
A cornerstone of Kevin Sheedy's 1980s dynasty, Madden was instrumental in the Bombers' back-to-back premierships of 1984 and 1985. His performance in the 1985 Grand Final against Hawthorn remains a defining moment, where his influence around the ground earned him the Norm Smith Medal. By the time he retired in 1992 after 19 seasons, he had amassed a then-club record 378 games, winning four Crichton Medals and securing his place as the ruckman in Essendon's Team of the Century.
