Standing at a massive 193cm, Kevin O'Halloran was a giant of the pre-war era who exploded onto the VFL scene with one of the most memorable debuts in league history. Recruited from Eaglehawk in the Bendigo Football League, the towering ruckman-forward booted seven goals in his first game for St Kilda in 1939, equalling the standing VFL record for a debutant. Despite this dominant start, he was often criticised for being "leaden-footed," and his lack of mobility saw him discarded by the Saints after just one season. O'Halloran subsequently became a quintessential journeyman, moving to South Melbourne for a year before a controversial permit dispute saw him switch from VFA club Yarraville to Footscray in 1941. His career was brief but unique, remembered primarily for his stunning first outing and the rare distinction of playing for three different League clubs in three consecutive seasons.
