Arriving at North Melbourne as a highly decorated recruit from Glenelg, Kym Hodgeman had already established himself as a star in the SANFL as a Magarey Medalist before testing himself in the VFL. A diminutive but tenacious rover, he possessed elite ball-handling skills and a dangerous goal sense that made him a constant threat resting forward. Hodgeman made a seamless transition to the top level, finishing equal second in the Brownlow Medal count in his debut season—though ineligible due to suspension—and consistently winning the football as a key driver of the Kangaroos' midfield. His class and consistency were rewarded with the Syd Barker Medal in 1984, highlighting his importance to the side during a transitionary period for the club. After five productive seasons at Arden Street, he returned to South Australia to captain Glenelg, leaving a legacy as one of the most successful interstate transfers of the 1980s.
