A remarkable mature-age success story, Lachlan Blakiston rose from the lower grades of Perth amateur football to the AFL in just a few seasons. After climbing the ranks from the Cockburn Cobras to become a dominant force for East Fremantle in the WAFL, the 203cm prospect was recruited by Essendon with pick 13 in the 2025 Mid-Season Draft to plug a critical gap in their depleted ruck division. He wasted little time adapting to the top level, showcasing his mobility and aerial competitiveness across 11 games in his debut half-year. While recruited primarily as a ruckman, Blakiston also demonstrated his capacity to intercept and spoil as a key defender, offering the Bombers valuable structural flexibility. Now with a contract extension in hand, he enters 2026 aiming to transition from a mid-season replacement to a staple of the senior side.
