Bio
Recruited from the Ormond Amateurs in the VAFA, Laurie Mithen arrived at Melbourne in 1954 as a highly rated prospect who had already claimed an A-Grade Best and Fairest. Although he initially hoped to join Richmond, residential zoning laws ensured he donned the red and blue, a twist of fate that placed him squarely in the centre of Norm Smith’s golden era. Mithen wasted no time establishing himself, debuting in Round 1 and playing in a Grand Final in his first season. He quickly became an integral component of the Demons' dynasty, featuring in five premiership sides between 1955 and 1960.
On the field, Mithen was renowned as a tough yet elegant footballer who possessed elite kicking skills and the ability to use the ball effectively on both sides of his body. While he began his career as a half-forward, his transition into the centre unlocked his full potential, allowing him to use his creativity and resilience to drive the team's engine room. His consistency was rewarded with back-to-back Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medals as the club's Best and Fairest in 1958 and 1959. After a decorated VFL career that included a stint as vice-captain and leading the club's goalkicking in his final year, he left in 1963 to captain-coach Port Melbourne. His standing as one of the greats was cemented when he was named on the interchange in Melbourne's Team of the Century.
