Bio
Born into a genuine Fitzroy dynasty, Les Hughson was the son of five-club player Les Sr and the nephew of the legendary 1944 premiership captain-coach Fred Hughson. After captaining the club’s Thirds, he graduated to the senior lineup in 1958, stationed primarily as a defender on the half-back flank. Wearing the number 8 guernsey, his time at the top level was defined by misfortune rather than lack of ability, as persistent fitness struggles prevented him from emulating the longevity of his famous relatives. His career was ultimately cut short when a severe knee injury sustained against Collingwood in 1962 forced his retirement on medical advice at just 24 years of age. Despite the premature end to his playing days, he remained a dedicated servant of the Lions, immediately transitioning into a role as the club's official runner following his rehabilitation.
