Bio
The son of Collingwood champion Billy Picken, Liam Picken was repeatedly overlooked by recruiters before forcing his way onto the Western Bulldogs' rookie list via strong performances for VFL affiliate Williamstown. Making his debut as a mature-age recruit in 2009, he quickly cemented his spot in the side as a disciplined run-with player, renowned for his endurance and ability to completely nullify elite opposition midfielders. For the majority of his career, he was viewed purely as a defensive stopper, rarely accumulating high possession numbers but highly valued internally for his selfless role execution and elite tackling pressure.
In the latter stages of his career, Picken underwent a significant transformation under coach Luke Beveridge, reinventing himself as a high-flying, goal-kicking half-forward. This shift proved a masterstroke during the club's 2016 premiership campaign, where Picken was arguably the Bulldogs' best player throughout the finals series, booting crucial goals in all four finals including the Grand Final victory over Sydney. Unfortunately, his time in the game ended prematurely due to severe ongoing concussion issues, forcing him to retire in 2019 just two games shy of the 200 milestone. He departed as a cult hero at the Whitten Oval, celebrated for his grit and his evolution from a tagger to a premiership-winning match-winner.
