Liam Pickering arrived in the VFL system via an unconventional sporting pathway, having initially pursued a first-class cricket career with Victoria before turning his full attention to football. Originally recruited by North Melbourne, he found opportunities limited in a strong Kangaroos lineup and was traded to Geelong ahead of the 1993 season. It was at Kardinia Park that Pickering established himself as a vital component of the senior side, becoming a key figure in the Cats' midfield during their charge to the 1994 and 1995 Grand Finals.

Known for his lack of pace, Pickering compensated with a sharp football brain, excellent spatial awareness, and clean hands in congestion. He evolved into a prolific ball-winner and a disciplined defensive midfielder who could negate opposition stars while winning his own ball. Following his retirement in 2000, he transitioned into a prominent off-field role as one of the AFL's most influential player agents and a media commentator.
