Arriving at Arden Street with a formidable reputation from the Wimmera, Michael Pickering was a tall, contested marking forward and ruckman who was heavily pursued by Essendon before signing with North Melbourne. The son of Stawell legend Wally Pickering, his VFL career was immediately hampered by a spate of injuries, including a serious ankle issue and a dislocated elbow that ruined his debut 1961 season. He returned late in 1962 to showcase his potential, booting three goals against Melbourne and another three the following week from a forward pocket, but the pull of home proved too strong. Pickering turned his back on the city to return to Stawell, where he became a country football icon, winning three club best and fairests and a retrospective Toohey Medal, though modern fans likely recognise him best as the father of Kangaroos and Cats player Liam Pickering.
