Bio
Recruited as a prolific mature-age sharpshooter from Ballarat Imperials, Lou Reiffel was a dangerous full-forward who wasted no time making his mark at VFL level. Joining Melbourne at 25, he proved to be a reliable avenue to goal, famously booting a career-high eight majors against Collingwood in 1937 and scoring in every game of his debut season. His career is often defined by a fateful "sliding doors" moment during the 1939 season; Reiffel transferred to South Melbourne midway through the year, a move that ultimately cost him a place in the Demons' premiership side that September. Despite missing out on the flag, he remained a potent scoring threat at the Lake Oval, topping the Swans' goalkicking in 1940, and is remembered today as the grandfather of Australian Test cricketer Paul Reiffel.
