Bio
Mabior Chol arrived in the AFL via the Brisbane Lions Academy pathway, though it was Richmond who handed the Sudanese-born forward a lifeline in the 2016 Rookie Draft after he was overlooked by his local club. His tenure at Punt Road was largely defined by patience; stuck behind key pillars Jack Riewoldt and Tom Lynch during the Tigers' premiership dynasty, he struggled to cement a consistent spot in the senior side. After showing flashes of potential but managing limited appearances over six seasons, he exercised his free agency rights to move to the Gold Coast Suns, where he immediately delivered a breakout 2022 season as the club's leading goalkicker.
Despite that initial success on the Gold Coast, Chol fell out of favour the following year and was traded to Hawthorn ahead of the 2024 season to bolster their attacking stocks. It was at Waverley Park that he truly endeared himself to the football public, becoming a cult hero and a central figure in the Hawks' rapid rise. An athletic key forward who provides valuable chop-out in the ruck, Chol is known for his mercurial playing style, combining high-flying marks with unexpected agility at ground level. While occasionally prone to quiet patches, he has established himself as a genuine match-winner capable of breaking games open with his vertical leap and instinct around goal.
