Recruited to Carlton as the son of 100-game defender Brian Buckley, Mark Buckley was a lightly-built but talented key forward who struggled to cement a permanent spot in the Blues' star-studded 1980s lineup. A classic left-footer capable of strong overhead marks, he showed significant promise in 1983 when he replaced an injured Ross Ditchburn and booted six goals against Richmond, eventually playing 20 games for the season. However, the arrival of Warren Ralph pushed him back to the fringes of selection, prompting a rare mid-season switch to St Kilda in 1985 where he added fleeting depth to a struggling list. Buckley extended his career by joining the inaugural Brisbane Bears squad in 1987, playing four games in the club's foundation year before finishing his time at the top level as a three-club journeyman.
