Bio
Recruited from Woodville-West Torrens with pick No. 10 in the 2022 National Draft, Mattaes Phillipou arrived at Moorabbin as a confident teenager ready for immediate senior football. The son of prolific SANFL forward Sam Phillipou, he played every game in his debut season, impressing initially as a high-marking forward with significant X-factor before shifting his focus toward the engine room. While his development curve included a necessary stint in the reserves during his second year to improve his running capacity, he responded by showcasing his potential as a big-bodied midfielder who can burst away from stoppages and hit the scoreboard. Now established in the Saints' lineup, the 190cm talent is viewed as a cornerstone of the club's future, balancing his time between contesting possession in the centre and drifting forward to exploit aerial mismatches.
