A strong-marking key forward with a penetrating kick, Sam Phillipou arrived at Footscray as a highly touted recruit from the SANFL. Although originally selected with pick 29 in the 1992 National Draft, he remained in South Australia to develop his game, notably playing in Woodville-West Torrens' inaugural premiership side in 1993 before eventually joining the Bulldogs for the 1995 season. He showed immediate potential on debut against North Melbourne in Round 8, taking contested grabs and hitting the scoreboard, but injury interruptions and stiff competition for key position spots restricted him to just three senior appearances. Following his delisting at the end of that solitary season, he returned to South Australia and carved out a distinguished SANFL career with both the Eagles and the Port Adelaide Magpies. The son of West Torrens great Peter Phillipou, his family legacy continues at the elite level through his son, St Kilda midfielder Mattaes Phillipou.
