Originally from East Fremantle, Matthew Carr began his AFL journey with St Kilda after being selected in the 1999 Pre-Season Draft. While he managed to break into the senior side at Moorabbin, playing 28 games across two seasons, he sought a return to his home state and was traded to Fremantle ahead of the 2001 season. It was in the purple haze that Carr truly established his identity at the elite level, evolving into one of the competition's most disciplined run-with midfielders. He became renowned for his capacity to nullify damaging opposition playmakers while possessing the aerobic tank to accumulate significant possession himself.

Carr's tenure at the Dockers was notably marked by the high-profile arrival of his younger brother Josh in 2005, with the siblings forming a rugged and aggressive midfield combination. This partnership was instrumental during the club's most successful era to that point, including the surge to the 2006 Preliminary Final. A durable competitor who served in the leadership group, Carr remained a fixture in the Fremantle lineup until the mid-2008 season, when he announced his immediate retirement. He departed the AFL as a respected tagger who played a significant role in establishing a harder edge to Fremantle's midfield culture.
