Bio
A tall ruckman spotted playing for the RAAF during World War II, Max Currie was recruited from Ormond Amateurs after initially training with Melbourne and Essendon. Standing at 193cm, he offered a commanding physical presence at stoppages but battled persistent leg injuries that restricted him to just 34 games over five seasons. His VFL career was severely hampered by these fitness issues, particularly during the 1950 and 1951 campaigns, which prevented him from cementing a long-term spot in the side. Despite interest from Melbourne, St Kilda, and Fitzroy to resume his VFL career, Currie chose to head to the country, where he became a successful captain-coach, leading Warracknabeal and Narraport to premierships. He maintained a lifelong connection to Punt Road, eventually returning to the club as a director and serving as deputy president in the 1980s.
