Bio
Hailing from Penguin on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Michael Gale was the first of the famous Gale brothers to make his mark on the AFL, continuing a family dynasty established by his All-Australian father, Don. Recruited to Fitzroy, he overcame a stuttering, injury-plagued start to his career to become a consistent performer for the Lions between 1986 and 1993. However, his career trajectory shifted dramatically at the end of the 1993 season when he became a central figure in one of the 1990s' most significant trade deals. In a move that reshaped both lists, Gale was packaged with teammates Paul Broderick and Matthew Dundas and sent to Richmond in exchange for the Tigers' captain, Jeff Hogg.
At Punt Road, Gale reunited with his younger brother Brendon and quickly endeared himself to the Tiger Army with his uncompromising approach. Known affectionately as "Butch," he was a tough-as-teak wingman and half-back flanker who combined courage in the air with a no-frills, team-first attitude. He became a vital cog in the Richmond side that broke a long finals drought, featuring prominently in their run to the 1995 Preliminary Final. Despite battling persistent injuries throughout his time in the game, Gale managed to carve out a respectable 196-game career across two clubs, retiring in 1998 as a highly respected clubman who added much-needed steel to the Tigers' midfield and defence.
