Recruited from St Kevin's Old Boys in the amateur ranks, Michael Pickering emerged as a highly skilled rover who became a standout performer for Richmond during the club's turbulent years in the late 1980s. Renowned for his class and goal sense, he was a prolific ball-winner who could drift forward and punish opponents, averaging better than a goal a game over his career. His individual excellence was highlighted in 1988 when he won the Jack Dyer Medal and earned All-Australian honours, establishing himself as a premier midfielder even as the Tigers struggled near the bottom of the ladder.

After 136 games at Punt Road, Pickering was cleared to Melbourne prior to the 1992 season as part of a list restructure. He brought valuable experience and composure to the Demons, playing a contributing role in back-to-back finals campaigns. While his time in red and blue was relatively short, he remained an effective contributor until his retirement in 1993, remembered best as a damaging, silky midfielder who provided rare highlights during a dark era for the Tigers.
