Drafted with the prestigious third pick in the 1992 National Draft, Michael Prior was a highly rated talent from East Perth who famously opted to remain in the WAFL for an extra season before joining Essendon. Upon arriving at Windy Hill, he developed into a reliable, running defender capable of shutting down opponents while providing drive from the half-back line. Although a consistent contributor throughout the mid-90s, Prior found himself on the fringes of the historically dominant 2000 squad; he played 11 games that year but was squeezed out of the premiership 22 for the Grand Final. Seeking greater opportunity and a return home, he was traded to West Coast at the end of that season, but his time as an Eagle was cruelled by a devastating knee reconstruction that effectively prematurely ended his AFL career. He later transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant at Fremantle and senior coach for West Coast's AFLW side.
