Bio
Recruited from NFL club Watsonia, Michael Reeves arrived at North Melbourne with a family connection—his father John had played for the Roos—and initially made his mark as a capable forward, famously booting two five-goal hauls against reigning premiers Carlton in his debut season. However, struggling to cement a permanent spot in North’s star-studded lineup, he spent a season in limbo before finding a new home at Fitzroy in 1983. The Lions reinvented Reeves as a tall utility, utilizing his 187cm frame primarily in defence and as a relief ruckman, where he became known for the distinctive padding worn under his shorts to protect against severe bruising. His career is most fondly remembered for the events of the 1986 Preliminary Final against Hawthorn; scheduled to be married that evening on the assumption Fitzroy would not progress that deep into September, Reeves was knocked unconscious by Robert DiPierdomenico and stretchered off the ground, yet famously managed to recover in time to make it to the altar that night.
