Recruited from VFA club Sandringham, Mick Grambeau was a tough, uncompromising follower who made an immediate impact at North Melbourne with his ability to win the ball and hit the scoreboard. A ruthless competitor who often rested forward to great effect, he is best remembered for his central role in one of the most tumultuous weeks in the club's history. Following a shock loss to St Kilda in 1955, Grambeau and teammate Laurie Icke were summarily dismissed by the committee, a decision that triggered a player strike threat and a protest by 2,000 supporters at Arden Street. Although the pair were reinstated after the public outcry, Grambeau’s relationship with the administration ultimately soured; he attempted to cross to St Kilda the following season but, blocked by a clearance dispute, instead departed for country football to captain-coach Ganmain on a record salary.
