Bio
Son of former North Melbourne player Mick Grambeau, Shane Grambeau arrived at St Kilda via the club’s metropolitan zone after the Kangaroos elected not to recruit him under the father-son rule. Initially debuting as a ruckman in 1971, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the senior side at Moorabbin, managing 51 games over five seasons. His career trajectory changed significantly at the end of 1975 when he became a central figure in one of the decade's most high-profile trades, crossing to Melbourne alongside Allan Davis (plus a cash adjustment) in the deal that saw club legend Carl Ditterich return to the Saints.
At Melbourne, Grambeau reinvented himself as a versatile key position player to revitalise his career. While he was initially deployed as a forward, he found his best form holding down key defensive posts, often lining up at centre half-back or full-back. He became a reliable contributor for the Demons, adding 60 games to his tally before departing midway through the 1979 season to join Woodville in the SANFL. His time in South Australia was later marked by a complex clearance dispute between Woodville and West Torrens, eventually leading to his return to Victoria to play for Prahran in the VFA.
