Nathan Bassett

Recruited from SANFL club Norwood, Nathan Bassett’s journey to AFL stardom was defined by persistence rather than pedigree. Overlooked by Port Adelaide for their inaugural list and ignored by every club in two national drafts, he was eventually thrown a lifeline by Melbourne in the 1997 rookie draft. However, his time with the Demons was a false start; hampered by a fractured sternum and a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, he never played a senior game for the club. In a move that would define his career, he was traded back home to Adelaide at the end of 1997, where he immediately seized his opportunity.

Bassett evolved into one of the league’s most reliable small defenders, known for his dogged determination and courageous intercept marking. While initially tasked with shutting down opposition small forwards, the emergence of Ben Rutten as a key defender allowed Bassett to develop a damaging rebounding game from the back pocket later in his career. His consistency was rewarded with All-Australian selection in 2006 and a runner-up finish in the club's Best and Fairest in 2005. Retiring as a 200-game player and Life Member, Bassett is remembered as a cornerstone of the Crows' defence throughout the 2000s who squeezed every ounce of potential out of his career.
