Bio
A patient, high-marking follower who served a four-year apprenticeship in the South Melbourne seconds, Stibbard finally broke into the seniors in 1946 before a mid-season clearance to VFA club Oakleigh. His VFL story found a second wind at North Melbourne the following year, where he is best remembered for a singular, historic afternoon. Thrown into defence for his club debut in Round 6, 1947, he was part of the famous side that staged a record-breaking comeback against Essendon, erasing a 44-point deficit at the final change to snatch victory. While his own senior career was brief, his name lived on at the elite level through his twin sons, Robert and Neville Jnr, the latter of whom returned to Arden Street decades later to build the club’s premiership lists of the 1990s as a master recruiter.
