Bio
Recruited from the Sandringham Dragons with pick 21 in the 2000 National Draft, Nick Ries emerged as a consistent midfield contributor for Hawthorn during a difficult rebuilding period. An industrious ball-winner who was frequently deployed in a run-with role to curb opposition playmakers, Ries relied on his high work rate and accumulation rather than elite foot skills to impact contests. He became a regular fixture in the senior side between 2004 and 2006, often featuring in the best players for his defensive efforts and ability to find the football. However, despite playing 20 games in his final season, he became a notable casualty of Alastair Clarkson's aggressive list management strategy, delisted at just 24 years of age as the club reshaped its squad to prioritise the speed and precision that would underpin their future premiership success.
