Bio
Selected with the first pick in the 2000 National Draft out of Southport, Nick Riewoldt arrived at Moorabbin carrying the weight of significant expectation. After a delayed start due to injury, he quickly justified the hype, winning the Rising Star award in 2002 and establishing himself as the focal point of the Saints' forward line for nearly two decades. Riewoldt redefined the centre half-forward position through his peerless aerobic capacity, famously working up the ground to the wing to provide a link option before doubling back hard towards goal to outwork his direct opponent. His playing style was further characterised by immense courage, frequently marking running back with the flight of the ball into oncoming traffic regardless of the physical toll.
As St Kilda's longest-serving captain, Riewoldt led the club through its most successful modern period, including the dominant home-and-away seasons and subsequent Grand Final heartbreaks of 2009 and 2010. While he never secured a premiership, his individual consistency was relentless, yielding six Trevor Barker Awards and five All-Australian selections. He remained loyal to the Saints despite lucrative offers to return to Queensland during the expansion years, eventually retiring in 2017 as the club's all-time leader in games and marks, and widely regarded as the best forward of his generation.
