Recruited from Bunyip in the Gippsland region, Noel Anderson commenced his VFL journey with North Melbourne, debuting in Round 1 of the 1959 season. His stint at Arden Street was restricted to a solitary game before he crossed to Richmond mid-season to link up with his younger brother, Bernie Anderson, who was also breaking into the Tigers' lineup. A solidly built utility standing 183cm and weighing 86kg, Anderson offered a physical presence but played a primarily defensive role during his time at Punt Road, failing to register a goal in his career. He played the majority of his football in the 1960 season, making nine appearances, before leaving the league with a total of 13 senior games.
