Bio
Selected by St Kilda with the first pick in the 2014 National Draft, Paddy McCartin entered the league as a powerful key forward prospect, but his tenure at Moorabbin was severely interrupted by repeated concussions and the management of Type 1 diabetes. After stepping away from the AFL following the 2019 season to address his health, he spent two years out of the elite system before reviving his career at Sydney, where he joined his younger brother Tom via the pre-season supplemental selection in 2022. McCartin successfully reinvented himself as an intercepting key defender, utilising his aerial strength to become a pillar of the Swans' backline during their 2022 Grand Final campaign. However, his return was ultimately cut short early in the 2023 season when further head knocks forced his retirement, concluding a career marked by immense resilience in the face of persistent medical setbacks.
