Bio
Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 33 in the 2017 National Draft, Tom McCartin entered the AFL as the youngest player in the competition for the 2018 season. While he began his tenure at Sydney as a contested-marking key forward, his career truly flourished following a permanent switch to the backline. This positional adjustment allowed him to utilise his aerial courage and spoiling capability to quell the influence of the league's premier key forwards, eventually seeing him reunite with his older brother, Paddy, in the Swans' defence during a memorable 2022 campaign.
Having surpassed the 150-game milestone, McCartin has evolved from a raw prospect into a pivotal figure in Sydney's defensive structure. His tenure has been marked by resilience, particularly regarding the careful management of head knocks which have occasionally interrupted his momentum. Despite these challenges, he remains an automatic selection when fit, valued for his intercept marking and disciplined one-on-one defending as a senior leader within the Swans' back six.
