Family

Arriving at the Western Oval via a contentious path, Pat Cahill crossed from VFA club Williamstown in 1939 without a clearance after a standout debut season where he won the Seagulls' best first-year player award. The younger brother of former Bulldog Ted Cahill, he established himself as a versatile tall utility, using his 188cm frame to shoulder ruck duties or hold down a key defensive post. His career was fragmented by the disruptions of the Second World War era, which prevented him from building consistent momentum despite a tenure at Footscray that spanned nearly a decade. After 47 games in the red, white and blue, he concluded his league service with a brief three-game stint at St Kilda in 1948.
