Bio
The son of former Carlton footballer Bill McNamara, Pat McNamara arrived at Melbourne from St Pat's in East Melbourne as a wingman. He became a regular fixture in the Demons' lineup during the mid-1930s, featuring in the club's 1937 and 1938 preliminary final campaigns, but was notably defensive-minded and failed to kick a single goal during his five seasons in red and blue. He transferred to South Melbourne for the 1939 season—narrowly missing out on the Demons' premiership dynasty that began that year—and spent two seasons in the seniors at the Lakeside Oval. McNamara remained influential at the club after his senior career wound down, eventually winning the Gardiner Medal in 1941 as captain-coach of the South Melbourne reserves.
