Bio
The middle member of the famous Morwood brotherhood to represent South Melbourne, Paul was a pacy rover and half-forward known for his sharp skills and goal sense. While he established himself as a key contributor during the club's turbulent final years at Lakeside Oval, his career is historically significant for his challenge to the VFL's transfer system. When the Swans relocated to Sydney, Morwood sought to remain in Victoria and attempted to cross to St Kilda in 1983. After the Swans refused his clearance, he took the matter to the Supreme Court, successfully arguing that the league's rules constituted a restraint of trade, a landmark moment that helped pave the way for greater player movement freedom.
Following his legal victory, Morwood spent three seasons at Moorabbin providing run and carry through the midfield before making a surprising return to the Swans for the 1986 season. He eventually rounded out his 170-game career with a final year at Collingwood in 1987. Although he played for three clubs, he is largely remembered as a central figure in the friction caused by South Melbourne's transformation into the Sydney Swans and the evolution of player rights in the 1980s.
