Bio
Recruited from Moe, Peter Somerville arrived at Windy Hill with a strong family connection as the son of 1962 premiership player John Somerville. His path to regular senior football was initially blocked by two of the game’s greatest ruckmen, Simon Madden and Paul Salmon, forcing him to serve a demanding apprenticeship in the reserves. Despite this hurdle, Somerville developed into a mobile and athletic big man known for his vertical leap and ability to take contested marks around the ground. His capacity to drift forward and kick goals became a crucial asset, allowing him to complement the team structure even when sharing ruck duties with established stars.
Somerville’s perseverance was rewarded during the celebrated 1993 "Baby Bombers" premiership season. With Madden retired, he stepped up to form a potent ruck division with Salmon, playing a vital role in the Grand Final victory over Carlton. He remained a consistent figure in the Essendon lineup throughout the 1990s, providing experience and durability during a decade of sustained success for the club. By the time he concluded his career at the end of the 1999 season, he had played 160 games, establishing his own legacy independent of his father’s and proving himself a loyal and effective servant of the club.
