Teams

A classic mature-age success story, Peter Walsh took a circuitous route to the AFL that included a stint in the army and form-building seasons in the SANFL with West Adelaide. After finally earning his shot via Melbourne’s rookie list, the Kyneton product wasted no time establishing himself, winning the Demons' Best First Year Player award in 1999. He became a fixture in the senior side across half-back and the midfield, playing a key role in Melbourne’s run to the 2000 Grand Final, where he gathered 20 disposals in the loss to Essendon. His most productive football came in 2001, where he polled 11 Brownlow votes and finished as the club’s highest vote-getter.

At the end of 2004, Walsh was traded to Port Adelaide, adding experience to the Power’s list following their premiership success. He enjoyed a strong debut season at Alberton, playing 23 games and featuring in the finals campaign, often utilised for his run and defensive accountability. However, injury and a club shift towards youth limited his output in 2006, leading to his delisting after 139 senior games. Walsh returned to the SANFL with West Adelaide to finish his playing days, leaving behind a legacy as a reliable, hard-working utility who maximised his opportunities at the elite level.
