Bio
Born into true Lions royalty, Ray Calverley arrived at Fitzroy with a famous surname as the son of club champion Des Calverley and the nephew of Team of the Century member Bruce Calverley. Recruited from St Joseph's College in East Brunswick, he joined his elder brother Graham at the club, continuing a significant family dynasty at Brunswick Street during the mid-1960s. A mid-sized utility who typically operated along the flanks or in a defensive role, he broke into the senior side as a teenager in 1965 but found consistent opportunities difficult to seize during a challenging era for the Lions. Despite the weight of history attached to his name, his VFL career was relatively brief, spanning three seasons and 21 appearances before he departed the league stage at just 21 years of age.
