A diminutive rover from Wonthaggi, Reg Baker was a fast and skillful player whose career was defined by unfortunate timing. Recruited to Collingwood alongside his brother Ted after starring in a practice match against the Magpies, he travelled from the State Coal Mine to Melbourne each week to play. Baker established himself as a dangerous small forward with exceptional evasive skills and elite stab-kicking accuracy, playing in Collingwood's losing Grand Final sides of 1925 and 1926. He returned to the country to captain-coach Wonthaggi in 1927, agonisingly missing the club's premiership breakthrough that season. Upon his return to Victoria Park in 1928, he found his position taken by stars like Harry Collier and Bill Libbis, prompting a mid-season move to Richmond—a transfer allegedly driven by his boss, a fervent Tigers supporter who threatened to sack him if he didn't switch clubs.
