A product of Scotch College and Kew, Selwyn Baker arrived at North Melbourne via the Richmond reserves, where he had already proven his quality as a joint winner of the Gardiner Medal. A clever and mobile rover who utilised his background as a professional runner to great effect, he became a dangerous avenue to goal for the Shinboners, finishing third on their goalkicking table in 1932 and earning prestigious state selection for the VFL in 1933. His career took an abrupt turn midway through the 1934 season when he crossed to Collingwood, motivated by a desire to follow in the footsteps of his elder brothers Ted and Reg. Despite the family connection, Baker’s time at Victoria Park was fleeting, managing just a solitary senior game in Round 17 before finishing his career in the VFA with Brighton.
