Recruited from the Calder Cannons with pick 9 in the 2015 Rookie Draft, Reilly O'Brien served a lengthy apprenticeship at West Lakes as the understudy to club stalwart Sam Jacobs. After biding his time in the SANFL for several seasons, he finally seized the number one ruck mantle in 2020 and immediately validated the club's faith, winning the Malcolm Blight Medal as Adelaide's best and fairest in his first full season as the primary ruckman. His rapid ascension from backup option to club champion highlighted his resilience and determination during a difficult rebuilding phase for the Crows.

Renowned for an elite aerobic capacity that often sees him winning pre-season time trials against midfielders, O'Brien plays as a high-work-rate tall who prides himself on second efforts and tackling pressure at ground level. While his contested marking provides a crucial bailout option down the line, his game is built primarily on endurance and physical attrition rather than flashy disposals. Now a seasoned veteran, O'Brien remains a central figure in Adelaide's structure, providing experience and stability in the centre square.
