Family

Walter Rex Byrne was a mature-age recruit whose football journey was largely dictated by his service in the Victoria Police. Born in the Wimmera town of Nhill, he was the middle brother of a notable footballing trio that included Fitzroy defender Alex Byrne and Carlton and Hawthorn utility Tom Byrne. A robust half-forward and follower, Byrne established himself in the VFA with Northcote before a posting to Mildura saw him briefly captain-coach the local side in 1930. A transfer back to Melbourne allowed him to join his brother Tom at Williamstown later that season, where he displayed his goal-kicking ability before returning to Northcote for a three-year stint. He finally earned his shot at VFL level with Fitzroy in 1934 at the age of 27, managing two senior appearances in the Maroon jumper before his police duties and age likely curtailed a longer League career.
