Bio
A tall recruit from Ararat in the Wimmera, Tom Byrne endured a winding path before establishing himself as a VFL regular. After a brief and unsuccessful four-game stint with Carlton in 1929, he dropped to the VFA, where he rebuilt his reputation as a key forward for Williamstown and even earned selection for the Association in a representative clash against the League. Following a 1934 season where he crossed to Fitzroy without playing a senior match, Byrne was thrown a lifeline by Hawthorn in 1935. He seized the opportunity at Glenferrie Oval, utilizing his 185cm frame to become a consistent marking target and goalkicker for the Mayblooms, averaging better than a goal a game over five dependable seasons.
