Bio
Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 39 in the 2015 National Draft, Rhys Mathieson established himself as a combative inside midfielder for the Brisbane Lions. Known affectionately as "Beast Mode," he played with an antagonistic edge and a strong capacity for winning contested ball, though he drew early scrutiny for his technique in drawing high-contact free kicks. Despite his ability to accumulate possessions and impact clearances, Mathieson found it increasingly difficult to cement a permanent position in the Lions' best 22 as the club's midfield depth grew with the arrival of star recruits. He eventually settled into a role as a high-performing depth player who dominated at VFL level, maintaining a cult following among supporters for his on-field energy until he was delisted following the 2023 season.
