Bio
A towering ruckman and key forward, Robert Doyle emerged from the South Melbourne under-19s to become a flexible tall option during a difficult era for the club. While often shouldering the ruck load, he proved dangerous when resting forward, evidenced by a career-best five-goal haul against North Melbourne at Arden Street in 1974. Doyle departed the Lake Oval midway through 1975 to join Port Melbourne in the VFA before a work transfer took him to South Australia, where he added 42 games for SANFL club South Adelaide. His connection to the Swans was revived decades later when his son, Stephen Doyle, was recruited to Sydney as a father-son selection in the 1999 draft, continuing the family lineage in the red and white.
