Family

Robert McGhie began his senior career at Footscray, where he showed early promise before a disagreement with the club saw him cross to Richmond ahead of the 1973 season. This transfer proved to be the catalyst for his career, as he settled instantly into centre half-back under coach Tom Hafey. A dashing and aggressive defender known for backing his judgement to run off his opponent, McGhie became a vital component of the Tigers' lineup, playing a key role in the club's back-to-back premiership triumphs in 1973 and 1974.

After six successful years at Punt Road, McGhie returned to Footscray for the 1979 season, though the homecoming was brief. He concluded his VFL journey with two seasons at South Melbourne, retiring with 146 games to his name. While he represented three clubs, his legacy is firmly entrenched at Richmond, where his combination of toughness and attacking flair from the backline helped define a golden era for the club.
